Save The Planet – Tic Toc Not Another Drop

Save The Planet – Tic Toc Not Another Drop

T he first oil was discovered by the Chinese in 600 B.C. But the beginning of today’s oil economy started with the discovery of oil in Pennsylvania in 1859 and in Texas in 1901.

Petroleum has made a wide variety of products possible that we probably can’t imagine living without. From fuels that power our cars, planes, and boats, to tires, fabric, perfumes, shoes, crayons, deodorant, medicines, dyes, cosmetic products, eye glasses, movie film, paints, and cleaning products just to name a few. And for all the good that has come from the use of petroleum, there are also costs - to our environment and to our health.

Millions of gallons of oil have been spilled on land and in oceans, polluting crop lands, water resources, the environment, and killing wildlife. When we combust oil to make energy, carbon monoxide and sulfur dioxide are created which cause health problems and can be life-threatening. They’re also polluting the air we breathe and contributing to climate change.

Alternatives to the use of petroleum need to be fast-tracked to help save our planet and our lives. To date nuclear, solar, and wind power are viable options but each needs more research and consumer implementation.

There’s no quick or easy solution, but we each can find ways reduce our use. Human existence is dependent on inhabiting a healthy planet. Encourage your community leaders to pass laws encouraging the use of alternatives. Discuss ideas with family, friends, and colleagues. We can even make a game of it by challenging each other and setting up rewards for goals met.

The good news is: we can make a difference. We just need to choose a first step and take it.
